Cybele and Hecate - Goddesses of Prophesy. They were the leading deities of mystery cults and considered powerful in divination, especially for those at a cross roads or starting a journey. Psychic divination, Cybele's rites are filled with throbbing drumbeats and trances. The Sybil (Cybele) prophesied in a caved dedicated to Hecate. Hecate's followers practiced divination at her underworld entry or a crossroads at midnight. The cult of Cybele idolized an earth-goddess of fertility in human, beast and field. Her worship was accompanied by the sound of crashing drums and cymbals, the music of the pipe, and the voices of her followers. Here inspiration came as a form of holy madness, which endowed the worhiper with a sense of mystic ecstasy and supernatural strength. Hecate (or Hekate) is the Greek Goddess of Witchcraft and the Underworld, often worshiped by modern witches and called upon to empower their spells. She is associated with the crossroads as she can guide you along the proper path to follow. Other associations include snakes and a torch to guide the way thru darkness. In this plaque based on a 4th century relief from Piraeus, Greece, Hecate cradles a torch, Cybele her drum and offering bowl. Measures 9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches cast in resin with a pewter gray finish.
